What happens at a silent retreat?
- A Vow of Silence.
- Participants commit to not talking, making eye contact, or using technology for the duration of the retreat.
- Activities typically include:
- Morning Yoga for purification.
- Teachings imparted by the teacher on a selected topic.
- Specific guided meditation for purification of the subtle bodies.
- Cooking Ayurvedic vegetarian purification meals.
- Ayurveda body work (not included in the price of the retreat.
- Walking in nature.
- A lot of rest (yes, we do nap).
- Seva – Selfless service (usually gardening or outdoor activities).
- The structure of the retreat follows the traditional Vedic tradition suggestions for resting and being in stillness.- The schedule is structured, and you receive support and guidance to calm the monkey mind.
Why go on a silent retreat?
- Deep Self-Reflection and connection.
- Silence offers a unique opportunity to turn inward and understand one’s own thoughts and emotions, free from external distractions. It gives you the chance to relax your mind and learn tools to reset the whole system.
- Stress Reduction:
- Disconnecting from daily life helps to calm the “fight or flight” response, allowing the body and mind to enter a state of “rest and repose”. Healing happens naturally, and a state of well-being arises during the retreat.
- Enhanced Focus and Clarity:
- By quieting the mind’s internal chatter, participants can improve focus, mental clarity, and memory. At the emotional level, it resets the turbulence of our emotions and gives our internal senses clarity, neutrality, and detachment.
- Reconnection with Self:
- The experience can help you discover a deeper sense of inner peace and reconnect with your purest self.
- Community in Silence:
- While silent, being with others who are also on a journey of inner work can be a comforting and powerful experience.
Descend from the chatting of the mind to the stillness of the heart.
Silent retreats have been used in the yogi tradition for thousands of years to enter into the world within. Restricted stimulation of the senses, silence, diet, Ayurveda, meditation, yoga, contemplation and self-inquiry sustain our deepest desire to know the self.
