Every time I visit India for my annual Ayurveda purification, my doctor gives me this sweet wine as a body preparation. In my particular case, it is a wine made of raisins and other components. In Ayurveda, these fermented medicated formulas are classified as arishtasavas. Due to its fermentation properties, it is readily absorbed by the body and can be used to enhance overall strength and vitality. Additionally, the medicinal properties of plants can be preserved for a long time through this type of preparation.
There are multiple formulas used for specific body constitutions and conditions. For example, these medicated liquids are used to treat fever, cough, bronchitis, sinusitis, indigestion, hemorrhoids, rheumatic diseases, diabetes, cardiac ailments, anxiety, stress, skin disorders, and arthritis, among other conditions. Used to improve general strength and vitality and is also useful in after-delivery care.
How arishtas  are made:
Arishtas are traditional Ayurvedic wines that undergo a fermentation process, in which raw plant materials and fruits are soaked either in powdered form or as a decoction (Kashaya), combined with sugar, jaggery, or honey as per classical texts. This mixture is left for a specified period to ferment, during which alcohol is naturally produced. The alcohol not only extracts the active medicinal principles from the ingredients but also acts as a natural preservative. After fermentation, the Arishta or Asava is filtered and should appear clear, without froth on the surface, and should not taste sour. The preparation maintains a characteristic alcoholic aroma. Quality control tests are conducted for total solids, pH, alcohol content, specific gravity, total reducing sugar, non-reducing sugar, and methanol. The color, aroma, taste, and other organoleptic properties of Arishtas and Asavas are routinely monitored.
The expiry period is 10 years from the date of manufacturing.
How to use arishtas:
The normal dose is 15 to 30 ml for adults and 5 to 10 ml for children, or as directed by the physician.
Usage: To be taken twice daily after food.
